Can you still go into B&Q and buy a boiler etc etc?
tryed to buy a honeywell gas valve yesterday from parts centre was refused, there was a poster on the wall to back him up!
The law is aimed at business and landlords who are fitting things for other people. It is definitely illegal for a non Corgi registered engineer to fit and service and gas appliance, but no law regarding buying parts.
The full law is explained here in a HSE (Health and Safety Executive) leaflet…

Yes you can buy a boiler without being Corgi. Try other places places for gas parts.you can get them without being Corgi.

I am sure that the Law was changed so that DIYers can now do Gas work in their OWN home only??
As I have a thumbs down
here is some links I found that talks about it for those that DON’T ACTUALLY KNOW!

corgi have advised all heating spares and plumbing merchants to only sell gas spares to corgi reg installers.
You can still buy boilers from B&Q for now,but eventually they will have to comply.
There was an article in last months installer magazine claiming that this will be the way ahead, and it will be a legal requirement.

It is not Corgi law, corgi don’t make laws, the decision by hrpc not to sell gas carrying parts to the general public was there own decision, and a very good decision at that, it is against the law to install gas carrying parts without being corgi registered, it is stupid because you probably don’t know how to leak test, pressure test, or electrical test a gas valve, so why should you want to buy it anyway? Hurrah for HRPC, excellent decision!

Corgi registered gas fitter for http://www.familygascare.co.uk
Stitched up would say that, wouldn’t he. I have installed all my gas appliances. I am a very competent DIYer and research the regulations and codes of practice.
A Corgi friend of mine checks my work and reckons he doesn’t need to as he is satisfied I am a competent person. Corgi is more about enlightened self interest and they have done virtually NOTHING in their history to improve gas safety.
30 years ago there were 50 deaths a year from gas related incidents. Today it’s 44.
The same is true of Part P for electricians. It’s all about backhanders for the John Prescotts of this world.

There are two sides to this coin. Lots of people agree with Corgi and lots of ppl don’t Same with the electrical regs.
I’m in the trade and I come across more and more in the electrical and plumbing trade that are getting peeved off with this red tape.
If my Corgi plumbing mate said "get a gas point for your cooker and I’ll fit it tonight", what would I do if no one would sell me one. Buying a product does not mean I’m gonna fit it.
If I said to a customer "go and get the 1000 bricks and I’ll build the wall tomorrow for you", doesn’t mean he’s gonna build a dangerous wall and it’ll fall onto someone, don’t think so.
Back to your point, I can see why it’s gonna come about but more red tape to be honest. It’s a plumbers license to print money.
Very easy to check for leaks, the trained monkeys do it !! (Don’t worry, my mate thinks monkeys can build walls as well)
I installed a pipe, mate checked it, I tested it for leaks with him and moved to monkey status! and it was spot on.
Added : Out of those 44, how many were from Corgi fitted appliances !!!!

So if your m8 says you are competent then thats ok !!!
If your knowledge is that good why have you not gone out and got your acs. What are you afraid of !
Must remember in future that if im questioned about my competency then i can say "Its ok, a m8 said im alright"
If there were 44 gas related deaths then perhaps its no wonder with so many people with a little knowledge thinking its ok cus my m8 said so !!!!!
Enough said i think !!

so while you get gas fitter in at £50 an hour you have to pay these rates to go the shop himself instead of customer going while he gets some work done.
