PostHeaderIcon Need general info on baseboard radiant heating and boilers??

I am considering buying a home with baseboard radiant heating (nat gas). The home was built in ‘62 and it has the original boiler. I have no experience with these systems. What brand of boiler would you recommend? I’ve got quotes for a Munchkin Boiler, pump, etc = $9000+ and a Noritz boiler, pump, ect. intsalled for around $8000. Are these reasonable quotes? FYI, it’s a 2000 sq ft tri-level home.

Also, the home is carpeted throughout and after reading about how the baseboard heating works, should I be concerned that the carpet is fairly snug under the baseboard heaters?

Are there any concerns with babies and small children climbing up and around the baseboards?? Thanks

I had electric baseboard heating when I bought my house. The area next to the heater was too hot and the far side of the room was too cold. My electric bill was out of sight. I got rid of the baseboard and installed central heat and air for less than 10,000$ and it does much better and much cheaper 2000sq ft built 1967. There was no problem with the carpet, and the heaters were well shielded from contact with drapes and children.

We have a natural Gas Boiler (Trinity-150 wall mount). This is same as Munchkin, just re-badged. It was working fine until now. What happens is that it tries to ignite once every hour without success. It says error code ER6, which can be either bad igniter or bad connection between two contacts that I have no idea of. I called the The contrcator who installed the boiler less that year ago (I bought the boiler new, from that contrcator) came the the same day I called and said the ignater could be bad and promised to come back with new ignator. We haven’t seen him ever since (more than week ago). I called several times and left a message, but noone answers. The boiler is covered with warranty, but manufacturer will only talk to the installer. What should I do? I am considering suing the contrator who left us freezing. We have heat pump and small electric heater and temperature in house is in low sixties. Please advise.

I agree sounds like a bad ignitor. Sounds like your contractor is screening his calls – try calling from a friends house he won ‘t recognize the number and will probably pick up phone thinking it is more business. Be nice to him on phone stroke his ego and tell him what a great job he has done and after he fixes problem report him to BBB

I’ve talked with 5 people about a new heating/cooling system, and have narrowed it down to 2 guys. Both gave me a quote for a hydro-air system.
Just regarding the boilers, are the following two fairly equivalent:
1) Weil Mclain Boiler Ultra 92% – 98%
2) 93% Efficiency Munchkin Contender wall hung boiler

Other pieces of equipment in the quote we are favoring (goes with the munchkin) … any opinion on these? Decent equipment? Note: this is a two story, 2200 sq ft home in South Eastern MA.

Two 20ton First Co hydro air handlers
Two 16 SEER, 410-a refrigerant goodman heat pump condensers
One 60gal superstore stainless steel hot water storage tank
Two 2-stage robertShaw programmable t/stats

Any questions I might be forgetting to ask? I’m in shock at the prices, and it’s hard to know the right choice.
Thanks for any opinions / advice!
The Munchkin Boiler with all the other pieces listed is $24k. The other, including the weil MacClein boiler is $28000. Not sure of all the other pieces of equipment, but "First Company" was also mentioned.
We are getting the heat pumps because they aren’ tmuch more than just the AC units. I suspect most of the winter they wouldn’t be in use, unless its a mild winter.
Not sure if it matters, but we have propane.
Would a different type of hot water heater be better? Just one totally seperate from the boiler?

The price of both units would be nice to know?
