I currently have an oil fueled hot water heating system and am looking for a less expensive way to heat my house now that gas is $4/gallon. There is no gas hookup into my house – what about electric baseboard heat? Would it be less expensive overall?
i'v e lived in places that had oil heat, gas heat and currently electric baseboard heatand i'm paying less than half for electric than i did for gas or oil. so anyone who says oil is better is crazy

Probably the WORST form of heat or hot water is electric – very expensive. I would ride out the oil problem and leave it – even running gas to the house is not that much cheaper.

You can replace your oil burner with a gas burner. Any gas company can install a line from the tank to the house. Before making a switch, compare the actual cost of operation. A simple math formula can help. BTUs per gallon divided by price per gallon tells you how many BTUs you can buy for a dollar. Multiply that number by the efficiency of the boiler to determine how many BTUs per dollar actually heat your house.
Changing to propane will be less expensive than changing to electric heat. To install electric baseboard you would have to add circuits and run new wires to every room in the house.
To install propane all that needs to be done is place a tank outside the house and run one line to the burner with a regulator somewhere in the line. The exhaust can go out the same vent that the oil burner uses now.
