Cookware 101

The market is filled with numerous varieties and brands of cookware to choose from that we often get confused on which ones to buy. Often, we purchase an entire set of cookware, without even knowing the different functions of the other pots, pans, etc. and what they really ought to be used for. So, we end up with a lot of clutter and unused cookware in the kitchen which is a complete waste of precious money aside from the fact that it will be occupying valuable space.

Before you go on buying any cookware or a cookware set for that matter, you should assess your needs on whether you need to buy only a few pieces or your requirements need for you to have a complete set. I will mention here some of the most common cookware and what they are basically used for so that you would know which ones to buy and which are more useful on your end.

Skillets or popularly known as frying pans are shallow and are best used for sautéing vegetables as well as searing and cooking meat. Pressure cookers are useful in tenderizing meat and it easily cooks the food. Stock pots are used for making soups and stocks. Casserole pans are used for making casserole. They are commonly made of Pyrex or ceramic. The great thing about casseroles is that they double also as a serving dish. A wok is popularly used in Chinese type of cooking. This is used for stir frying vegetables and small pieces of meat. It cooks food in high heat with little amount of oil. If you enjoy making grilled sandwiches, pancakes or French toast, why not opt to buy a griddle. The most popular types of griddles are the electric ones and those that are Teflon coated. A double boiler is one that is made of two pots with a smaller pot sitting on top of a larger one that is filled with water. If you enjoy grill food, you could also purchase an indoor grill that saves you the expense of an outdoor grill. It also offers the advantage of being less messy. Saucepans are deep round pans used for creating sauces, stewing and simmering.

If you want to have one of each kind you could choose to go for cookware sets. It is usually cheaper than if you were to buy all the items on the set individually. But I would suggest that if you wouldn’t have any use for the other kinds; purchase only the ones which would be highly useful for you.

My friend worked at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and recommended Calphalon to me. I got it for my wedding seven years ago and it is still going strong. I love it. Major downside? Not dishwasher safe.

Lagostina stainless steel. Last for years, food doesn't stick and you can throw it in the dishwasher. I love it!

I got a great set from Macy's. It is their "house brand" and rated very highly on Consumer Reports. I must say I love it & didn't have to mortgage the house to get a full set (plus, I can buy matching stuff, as needed too). The one I chose is called "Belgique" by Tools of the Trade. Probably made for them by one of the more costly brand names.

Check them out! You won't be sorry! (The biggest hassle is getting the protective film off the copper bottoms…ugh!)

Hello, this is one of the questions that you have got to know the answer because of quality.
here are some things you have to know before buying cookware and which is the best for you.
Anodized and Nonstick, no matter what brand or how expensive it is, they ALWAYS scratch and end up rusting listen to this carefully cus its very true, i went trhu so many brands before sticking to the one i have now.
Cast Iron is for certain types of food that you will be cooking, its NOT and everyday using cookware.
If you want something that will last you for years i recomend you Calphalon's Stainless steel, the reason is this one and i will make 3 comparisons according to what i have right now and what i've dealt before.

Simply along with Try-Ply are the best, there is alsoWolfgang Pucks cookware which is good but not as good as Calphalons why…. here is why:
Calphalons size and weight tells you the difference that will last you forever, wolfgangs is very thin pans, sometimes they send them to you crooked lids and rusty on the bottom of the pans, i have them both brands so i know.
when you buy Calphalons those come with an extended life warranty, Wolfgangs is limited and they give you a hard time if you want to return their products.
I have had my Calphalons for 5 years and they look like i bought them yesterday, each pan is heavy weight and everything cooks evenly, I'm not saying Wolfgangs is bad, I was forced to keep them cus i couldnt return them, they were for a wedding present and decided to buy another Calphalon set since its the best so far and it was my brothers wedding i wanted to give him the best.

you can also go online reading revies if you like of the sets you'd like to get, you might be able to get Wolgangs on HSN for monthly payments which is not bad but you could get the same sets @ Sams Club for 99 bucks or at least if you just want to check for your self in the store and compare with other types, Kitchen Aid is also available but like the others its NONSTICK and it will get scratched and rusty overtime, so its up to you, pricey but last longer or cheap and you will have to keep replacing them overtime.
Its the same thing with Knives, ALWAYS make sure you have a good knife no matter the price, those are the 2 most important rules for a kitchen, good cookware and good knives, the rest falls in place after these two are already on ur kitchen, so Good Luck.

ps: i bought my Calphalons from ebay, saved 300 bucks, yes i payed almost 300 for them new and they are worth the whole 600 bucks but like i said they look like knew after 5 years but if i had to buy a cookware and couldnt afford Calphalons I'd go for Wolfgangs they are still good, they also have some Stainless Steel @ walmart.
I also forgot to mention, this is what all the profesional chefs are using right now.
