The government has announced a boiler scrapage scheme but is electricity a better option?
Any experience welcomed.
I have and old Gas Boiler and I realise the grant is to fit a new efficient boiler.
I wonder if electric is a cheaper green option.
Gas is by far the cheaper option, the scrappage scheme is a benefit but only if you need to replace you boiler, a replacement is normally about £2000 to £4000, depending on who does it, using the Sedbuks own figures, the saving that you make from using less gas by installing a condensing high efficiency boiler, would take about thirty years to get back, unfortunately, these boilers are only expected to last for about fifteen years, so you will never actually make a saving, the scrappage scheme is not the same as it is for cars, a car you can sell when you want to replace it but a boiler is with you until it breaks down or you move to another property, keep your present boiler until it needs replacing, at least you can put off the extra expense until it is necessary.
i am looking for instructions on how to use my Electric egg boiler please?

No. Night storage is still more expensive than gas.
The scrappage scheme is for replacing an old inefficient boiler, not for switching to night storage heaters.
Storage heaters need to be in each room, and by the evening they are usually cold.
You only need one gas boiler to heat the whole house, as well as your water.

i have storage heaters in my house,
they work wonders, i would say they cost ruffly the same,
and once its on its one, they hardly ever get a problem.

Night storage doesn’t work that well in a home so you end up putting on extra heaters in the evening, costing even more. Gas central heating is much better. I switched a couple of years ago and would never go back to storage heaters.

im a builder in uk ..go for a gas combi worcester bosch are good and ferroli are making good boilers now ..to show how efficient they are the outlet duct is now made of plastic!…the big problem with storage heaters is you cant have heat when you want it

You could try a wet electric boiler. No flue gases so 100% efficient.http://www.dealec.co.uk/acatalog/Heatrae_Sadia_Amptec_Electric_Boilers.html

it all depends on the cost of each item.on balance, electriticy is far dearer than gas, but, you have to work out your sums carefully.

A combination gas boiler is more economical particularly as it is a single point heat source that also provides hot water.
New regulations eg the ‘Code for Sustainable Homes’ ( by which all government funded housing must comply) views electric storage heating very unfavourably. It favours gas boilers much higher particularly if used in conjunction with a renewable energy source for hot water EG solar energy.

One of the problems with nightstore heaters is you need to be able to interpret a weather forcast and then make up your mind if its correct. Once you have turned the heaters off because its going to be ‘warm’ and then its cold its too late and then you have to use dearer on peak to keep warm and the reverse also applies and you will have heat you have paid for and now dont need so its wasted. Gas is on demand turned up/down as you need when you need.
