Could you please list the pros and cons of heating your tap water with an immersion heater as opposed to your central heating gas boiler (assuming you have both installed). How do the costs compare here in the U.K. nowadays? Thanks
I’m using an old gas boiler which heats the water in the tank in the airing cupboard ( also the central heating of course). And I’m am thinking of getting an immersion heater as the main tap water heater, or as a standby tap water heater in case the Gas Boiler becomes unrepairable in the middle of the winter !
Normally Gas is the cheapest option the easiest way to compare this is to see how much a gas unit costs and how much electric costs
Standard Charge – Electricity Standing charge £0.00
Unit Rates 1 Unit Rates 2 Unit Rates 3
11.0040p 7.8225p
Up to 900Kwh
Standard Charge – Gas Standing charge £0.00
Unit Rates 1 Unit Rates 2 Unit Rates 3
5.8496p 3.2088p
Up to 2680Kwh
This is taken off money supermarket as you can see gas is 6p elec is 11p
so in the long run gas is 1/2 as far as you possible use gas only for emergency electric
Why does my gas boiler keep relighting when it is already lit?

If you are using, for example a combi boiler, for hot water/central heating, then you will only heat the water that you are using at that time. If you are using an immersion heater then, in effect, you are storing hot water. Leaving the power on, without using the water is expensive.
I suppose solar panels would supply the electricity, but panels are costly, and you would need a lot of them!
Gas prices vary enormously; different tariffs, different companies, so you would have to do your homework carefully.
My preference is gas, mainly because I can control the usage more effectively.
