Why does my gas boiler keep relighting when it is already lit?
The pilot light is on and the gas is burning then there will be a series of loud clicks like the thermostat with interspersed ticking from the igniter. Sometimes the gas will then go out and relight again. This goes on all day but almost constantly just after the timer switches it on from cold.
OK, the boiler is a Servowarm Supreme radiator / boiler combi. The clicking is definitely the thermostat switching on and off repeatedly and its this that is forcing the gas to relight. What could be causing the thermostat to switch on and off repeatedly (often 20 times a minute)? It does sound as though there is air in the system (some bubbling and gurgling) but I have been unable to bleed it out. All readitors are fully bled.
Hi on a lot of combi boilers, there is a preference for hot water. this means that the boiler will first fulfil a demand for hot water rather than run the heating. what happens is if the heating is on and the boiler running, as soon as the hot tap is opened the boiler will start to produce hot water.
to do this it will stop the heating cycle and refire the boiler.
the boiler will then refire when the hot water demand stops and it turns back to heating.
so basicly the more the hot water is used around the house the more it will restart.
it would be tough to give a diagnosis on this without more system information but this is just to let u know that the refiring can be completely normal.
Make and model of boiler would help?

It probably needs servicing. All gas boilers accumulate deposits on the burner and it may be that it is struggling to develop a decent flame or pilot. If the pilot jet is partly obstructed it will not heat the flame failure device properly and you will get repeated ignition sequencing and cycling. You are also wasting that precious commodity – gas. Ask a Gas Safe engineer to service it. British Gas Services is a good choice.

Turdy and Barry are both right so many people ask questions about boilers in particular and dont say what boiler they have which can in many cases make it impossible to offer any real help. As to the problem it does sound as if your boiler doesnt actually know its lit so it keeps trying so as has been said a good service will probably sort out the problem and hopefully give peace of mind until next year.

Check your boiler thermostat is set correctly, NOT THE ROOM Stat.
if your boiler is fed by a water tank, it can be that the supply tank has run dry, in which case the boiler will only heat the water in the boiler and shut down, then when the temperature of the water in the boiler has dropped a few degrees it will come back on and go through the same process.again.

Its either a defective gas valve or the flame rectification device or the air pressure switch.Needs diagnosing by a competent gas safe engineer.Boilers are no longer simple machines. They are as complicated as computers now.Hence the £65.00 per hr.fixing charges.Good luck.
