Dear Sirs:
We have been having what we believe are draft problems with our unit. We
have talked to a technician from your office once or twice on the phone. The
dealer installed a 16 ft chimney sized down to 8″ diameter immediately out
of the unit. This is inside a 50 X 180 FT building. We have had problems
with smoke billowing into the building. There has been a choo-choo train

effect since day one. We added another 4 ft of chimney to the top in April
and that helped the draft but it is still not right.
We have gone through two solenoids that open and close the flow of air
into the unit within the first month. Since the beginning of April we have
been manually opening and closing this to allow more air to enter on the
burn cycle. The dealer thinks this is getting too hot but you can easily put
your hand on the plate itself or anywhere around the solenoid at anytime and
have nothing but luke warm temps maximum. The heat from the choo-choo effect
is not hot so we don’t think that is the case.
Attached are videos illustrating the problems. We would like your help
in determining what to do next. Video 407 shows the choo-choo effect about
half way through and illustrates what we have seen since the initial fire
up. Video 406 shows the burn when the door is open and shows the smoke
billowing out. We feel this should be going up the chimney.
Please help us with some answers. Should we add more stack height to
increase the draw? Should we add a turbo draft unit and if so what is the
cost? Should we have 10″ chimney all the way up? The 8″ reduces the draft
30% by our calculations. If we get the draft right we think the solenoid
will perform better.
