We have an outdoor Wood Boiler. We heat our hot water heater with this. We have not had any problems until now. Once the temp on the boiler outside hits 185 then the water starts to come out of the discharge tube on the hot water heater in our garage. I mean run out. Maybe so far today 3 gallons. Once the temp goes down alot cooler on the boiler maybe 110 then the water stops coming out of the tube. The hot water tank is only 3yrs. old.

I’d guess you have the temperature set too high (130 is the recommended max) and the pressure is building up in the tank until it does what it is supposed to, relieve it through the discharge tube.

It could be that your thermostat is on the way out ,you will need a plumber to check your system out .

there should be an expansion tank on the system. If it is a bladder type tank it may need air or the tank is shot. if it is a closed tank it my need to be drained as it wont function if full.
    Hope this helps.
